Cherokee-M Construction - Finishing

August 17, 2003:

I had already decided to leave the painting for the professionals, and that would include a good primer to fill the weave on the carbon lamination. Before bringing it in, though, I wanted to fill the bigger defects where the cloth had bunched up a little or where air-bubbles had gotten trapped under the vacuum bag, to give them a nice level surface to work with.

This meant sanding down a couple of high-points (not too many, because that weakens the layup) and filling in a few low points with SuperFill epoxy-based lightweight filler. This gave a kind of blotchy look to the fin can, which would soon be covered by a nice, smooth, glossy coat of paint.
